He added if the police could "deal with" some of the tools that the criminals were using they would be able to make progress.Describing a gun as an "unforgiving weapon" Ewatski said the police needed to take a "broad approach" in tackling "firearms coming in illegally and legally.""It is something we are very cognisant of in the Police Service but it is a difficult issue to address on our own," Ewatski said.Police officers, he added, must be held accountable for police issued firearms, especially in light of claims made that lawmen often rent their guns to criminals."It speaks to the accountability that is required and we have to ensure we have the systems and proper management supervision in place to ensure our procedures are followed to the level," he added.
