Workers at T&T National Petroleum Marketing Company Ltd’s (NP) Sea Lots plant escaped serious injury, and even death, when a boiler exploded early yesterday. The incident took place at 8 am at the Lubricants Plant (LOBP) at the NP plant on 1 National Drive, Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain.A release from NP’s communication’s unit said the problem occurred with the internal ignition on one of the boilers which caused its exhaust stack cover to be blown off.

The release also confirmed that none of its workers were injured in the blast and the boiler was immediately shut down and isolated. According to officials at NP, a full investigation has been ordered into the incident. NP also assured the public that “key fuel operations” remained intact and that activity at the lubricants facility was expected to return to normal by today. In a telephone interview yesterday, Chief Fire Officer Carl Williams said the incident was not reported to the Fire Services.
