Justice Minister Herbert Volney says no to vigilante justice in T&T. Volney, after he presented the letters of appointment to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, was responding to questions about the release of a man who chased and allegedly killed a robber in Barackpore last Thursday. The man was arrested and later released without charge.
Shortly before 5 pm on Thursday two men entered a woman's home in Barackpore and chopped a fisherman who was asleep on a sofa. They threatened to kill the woman and later escaped with jewelry and an undisclosed sum of money. The woman's relative, who was in his car close by, allegedly chased the bandits and ran over one with his car. He died and the other was detained by police.Volney said yesterday while the criminal law "does not recognise provocation other than to reduce murder to manslaughter, it does permit people to defend themselves, their family and their property."He stressed, however, that what it "does not permit is for persons to run down someone and inflict injury when the question of defence no longer arises."
