Three employees of Guardian Media Limited will carry the hopes of the organisation in the Best of the Best Calypso Competition on Friday at 5 pm. They are sports editor Valentino Singh (Urchin), Alicia Williams, a veteran Road March winner, and Jason Jackman, a newcomer. The competition, which takes place at the Guardian Car Park, St Vincent Street, Port-of-Spain will see these singers come up against Don Creese, Hillary Clarke, Keron Mondezir, Mervyn Wilson, Michael Robertson, Serjio Acosta, Shermaine John and Miguel Marquez.

This year’s event will mark the 130th anniversary or the Ansa McAl Group, and the original Guardian Competition has been expanded to include other arms of the conglomerate. This show kicks off a year of events. Show producer, Fitzroy Dove said that all systems are go for a bumper evening of calypso and soca.

Guest artistes are lining up like cooked food sharing. Already Cassie, the “Town Ting man” as well as Pelf, Ninja, Lal Bharat, Patch, Oscar B and Gayatones and Crazy (who holds the record for appearing since the inception of the competition) have signalled their participation in the guest slot. Soca artistes and calypsonians are also invited to perform. Over the years, H20 Phlo has been a fixture at the show.
