Recently deceased farmers’ activist Norris Deonarine represented the true spirit of selflessness and dedication. This according to Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation Khadijah Ameen, last Friday, as she expressed sadness over his passing.  Deonarine was the Education and Research Officer of the National Food Crop Farmers’ Association. Ameen said Deonarine will be difficult to replace and he was a dear colleague and an amazing friend.

“He was a true people person to one and all. His passing will not only leave a void in the landscape of T&T but also in the hearts of those whom he touched,” Ameen said.  The Chairman last spoke with Deonarine on Thursday as he related the horrifying incident at Lopinot, San Jose Estate where cutlass-wielding men attacked farmers and residents.  “We made plans for a farmers’ meeting in Paria for the weekend. Norris was his usual vibrant self. His untimely death will surely impact the way forward,” Ameen said.

She said Deonarine represented the salt of the earth. “As a forceful advocate over the years, Norris successfully protested alongside myself and residents in Spring Village in 2008 when the Government of the day attempted to bulldoze the farmers’ homes and crops,” Ameen explained. Deonarine was a tower of strength and encouragement to Ameen when she was arrested. “The residents will be eternally grateful to him. My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. May he rest in peace,” she said.
