An ambulance technician from the Emergency Medical Services has been charged with stealing two $10,000 inverters used to power oxygen tanks in ambulances. The suspect, aged 33, of La Rufin, Moruga, as well as another suspect, was arrested by officers from the Princes Town High Performance Team following extensive investigations by Sgt Don Gajadhar, PC Dookie and PC Morris. Police said over the past few months several inverters, used to convert battery power to AC power, went missing from the ambulances, causing distress and death to patients.
The ambulances are tracked by GPS but police said they believed the technician was able to disarm the GPS system and steal the inverters. Early Monday, officers raided the suspect's home and arrested him. He was charged with two counts of larceny after the inverters were recovered. The inverters can also be used to power equipment in boats and pirogues. Meanwhile, members of two Cedros families were held when police, headed by ASP Rajkumar, raided several homes, seizing a quantity of ammunition and marijuana.
The detectives, including Ag Cpl Sheldon Ablacksingh, Cpl Jaggernauth, PC's Badry, Boodlal, Scipio, Ramnarine and WPC Cobhan, went to Fullerton where they carried out a search and found the ammunition in a black garbage bag, hidden in the kitchen at one home. Family members, age 24, 56, 28 and 42, were arrested and taken to the Point Fortin Police Station where they were questioned.
