Minister in the Ministry of National Security Subhas Panday is calling on Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs to submit a full report into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of duty by police officers at the Prime Minister's residence in south Trinidad. During the country-wide sick out action staged by officers some three weeks ago, it was reported that officers failed to report for duty including at the residence of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Yesterday, Panday said he was yet to be made aware of the status of the report which was supposed to be submitted by Gibbs. "Up to now we have had no official report from the police commissioner. I don't know what they waiting on," Panday said.
Police sources, however, said that no officer was expected to be charged given the circumstances of the incident. President of the Police Service Social and Welfare Association Anand Ramesar said he also expected that no charges would be laid. He said during a recent meeting with Persad-Bissessar just before Carnival, assurances were given that no officer would face disciplinary action. "The prime minister did expresses her disappointment, but having regard of the circumstances a decision was taken for no charges be laid," Ramesar said. Dismissing rumours that there was "total abandonment" by the police at the prime minister's home Ramesar said other officers "filled in, including members of the Special Branch."
