Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner says he expects construction of the $5.2 billion highway from Golconda to Point Fortin to begin in a week's time.He was speaking with reporters yesterday after reopening Tenant Trace, Penal, which had been closed because of a massive landslide.Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar turned the sod to mark the start of construction of the highway on January 26."The work has started and funds are being sought now and by now and next week we should know what is happening...We don't have a problem," Warner said yesterday. He said he had every reason to believe things "should be on track fully in a week's time."
He said work was being done on designs and the offices and equipment were already on site."Work has started...A lot of things are being done behind the scenes and you will not actually, fully see, but work has started," Warner said.He also said the time had come to change all traces to roads, avenues and streets. He pointed out traces were around from the colonial days.He said the cost of the five-month repair to Tenant Trace was $2.6 million, which was a small price to pay for people's comfort.
