Lewis encouraged the 114 pupils to practise the skills taught in DEP and go in their communities and teach people about dengue. In phase one of the programme, approximately 6,000 students and parents participated. Priority was given to schools in areas that had a high level of dengue infections in 2010. The programme used Internet resources and the use of video game technology for assessment of the students' knowledge of dengue after five sessions of lectures. The students were also required to produce posters and flyers warning the public about the dangers of dengue and possible preventative environmental measures which could be adopted to reduce it.
