Lewis en­cour­aged the 114 pupils to prac­tise the skills taught in DEP and go in their com­mu­ni­ties and teach peo­ple about dengue. In phase one of the pro­gramme, ap­prox­i­mate­ly 6,000 stu­dents and par­ents par­tic­i­pat­ed. Pri­or­i­ty was giv­en to schools in ar­eas that had a high lev­el of dengue in­fec­tions in 2010. The pro­gramme used In­ter­net re­sources and the use of video game tech­nol­o­gy for as­sess­ment of the stu­dents' knowl­edge of dengue af­ter five ses­sions of lec­tures. The stu­dents were al­so re­quired to pro­duce posters and fly­ers warn­ing the pub­lic about the dan­gers of dengue and pos­si­ble pre­ven­ta­tive en­vi­ron­men­tal mea­sures which could be adopt­ed to re­duce it.
