Grants committee approves UWI teachers 5% increase

The five per cent increase agreed to between the West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) and the University of the West Indies (UWI) has been formally ratified.  The  University Grants Committee Meeting ratified the increase at a meeting on Monday at the Hilton T&T Conference Centre, St Ann’s, according to a news release from the UWI.  The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister Winston Dookeran. Minister of  Science, Technology and Tertiary Education, Senator Fazal Karim, UWI principal Professor Clement Sankat and other regional finance ministers also attended. Sankat said he was extremely “pleased the University Grant Committee ratified the agreement.” The five per cent increase will apply to the period 2008 to 2011, with one per cent for the period 2008/2009, two per cent for 2009/2010 and the final two per cent for 2010/2011. The agreement expires in August.
