San Juan South Secondary School is celebrating its 50th anniversary and has planned a year-long programme of activities leading up to the golden anniversary in February 2012. The celebrations got under way on Thursday at the school's compound on Moreau Road, Saddle Road, San Juan. The school, which has produced several prominent citizens, is one of 16 five-year institutions constructed by the PNM government under the late Dr Eric Williams. It was Williams' vision to make more educational opportunities available to all citizens as opposed to the then existing elitism of education in secondary schools.
Some of the planned activities include a 5K/10K road race, an interfaith service and a family fun day.
The events will culminate with an anniversary dinner and awards ceremony scheduled for February 25, 2012. The school boasts of enriching its students intellectually, socially, aesthetically and emotionally.
Among some of its prominent past students are former Minister of Energy, Errol Lewis; Ephraim Serrette, former national athlete and president of the NAAA; manager of the T&T Rugby team, Curtis Nero; calypsonian Kizzy Ruiz; former Miss T&T Nicole Dyer-Griffith and soca artiste Roderick "Chucky" Gordon.
