Sorillo completes sprint double

Ron­dell So­ril­lo com­plet­ed the sprint dou­ble last night when he beat a qual­i­ty field in the fi­nal of the men's 200 me­tres at the South­ern Games at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre. The suc­cess fol­lowed vic­to­ry in the 100m on Sat­ur­day when he got to the line in 10.51 sec­onds, well ahead of the 2010 Ja­maican na­tion­al cham­pi­on Os­hane Bai­ley (10.60) and Guyana's Adam Har­ris (10.65). Mul­ti­ple Olympic and World 100m fi­nals Az­iz Za­kari of Ghana was fourth in 10.80. Bai­ley (21.15) al­so had to set­tle for sec­ond place in the 200 as So­ril­lo clocked 20.95 in tak­ing the gold medal. Third was Za­kari in 21.54. Aaron Arm­strong failed to fin­ish.

The women's sprint was won by USA's Glo­ria Asum­nu in 11.80 re­sist­ing the chal­lenge of T&T ju­niors Michelle Lee Ahye (11.88) and Lisa Wick­ham (12.42). In the men's open event, Jamol James was the vic­tor (10.84). The Mem­phis sprint­er fin­ished ahead of Joel Dil­lon (Sim­plex) 10.82 and Ray­mond Camp­bell (Tigers) 10.87. Sim­plex's Mori­ba Morain ran away with the Boys Un­der 20 100m dash in 10.84. To­co's Kishorne Wal­cott stole the spot­light with a na­tion­al ju­nior record in the men's javelin. Wal­cott won with a throw of 67.02 me­tres which bet­tered the pre­vi­ous mark which he set in 2010 by one me­tre. In sec­ond place was Hakim Wal­cott (64.80) with for­mer na­tion­al cham­pi­on Rick Fran­cis (TTDF) third in 46.63m.

Amer­i­can ath­letes cap­tured the open 400m races with reign­ing world in­door dou­ble cham­pi­on Deb­bie Dunn (USA) tak­ing the women's ti­tle in 54:30 ahead of com­pa­tri­ots Bran­di Cross (55:30) and Aly­cia Williams (55:31). Je­re­my Davis ran away with the men's race in 47:22 from Ja­maican Oral Thomp­son (48:24) and TT's ju­nior De­on Lendore (48:53). De­fend­ing cham­pi­on and reign­ing World Ju­nior 400m hur­dles gold medal­lis Je­hue Gor­don was beat­en in­to fourth (48:63). Adel Colthrust, Jem­i­nise Par­ris and Mori­ba Morain com­plet­ed sprint dou­bles. Colthrust (South­ern Ath­let­ics) took the Boys Un­der 13 200m to add to the 100m dash he took on Sat­ur­day. Par­ris (Mem­phis) al­so was a dou­ble win­ner rac­ing to gold in the girls un­der 15 200. Par­ris cap­tured the 100m. Mori­ba Mori­ba was the vic­tor in the boys un­der 20 200m to com­pli­ment his 100m vic­to­ry. Rob No­vak took the 800/1500m dou­ble.

The Amer­i­can sped to gold in the 800m to af­ter tak­ing the 1500m on Sat­ur­day. Cleve­land Forde (Guyana) fin­ished strong­ly to pass Alex­is Pina in the fi­nal 100m to take the men's 5000m much to the de­light of the Guaracara Park crowd. T&T's Den­zel Ramirez was third. Reign­ing world in­door dou­ble cham­pi­on Deb­bie Dunn al­so did a dou­ble tak­ing the women's 200m and 400m. Yes­ter­day she sped to gold in half lap event in 23:68 to add to the 400m vic­to­ry on Sat­ur­day.
