Rondell Sorillo completed the sprint double last night when he beat a quality field in the final of the men's 200 metres at the Southern Games at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre. The success followed victory in the 100m on Saturday when he got to the line in 10.51 seconds, well ahead of the 2010 Jamaican national champion Oshane Bailey (10.60) and Guyana's Adam Harris (10.65). Multiple Olympic and World 100m finals Aziz Zakari of Ghana was fourth in 10.80. Bailey (21.15) also had to settle for second place in the 200 as Sorillo clocked 20.95 in taking the gold medal. Third was Zakari in 21.54. Aaron Armstrong failed to finish.
The women's sprint was won by USA's Gloria Asumnu in 11.80 resisting the challenge of T&T juniors Michelle Lee Ahye (11.88) and Lisa Wickham (12.42). In the men's open event, Jamol James was the victor (10.84). The Memphis sprinter finished ahead of Joel Dillon (Simplex) 10.82 and Raymond Campbell (Tigers) 10.87. Simplex's Moriba Morain ran away with the Boys Under 20 100m dash in 10.84. Toco's Kishorne Walcott stole the spotlight with a national junior record in the men's javelin. Walcott won with a throw of 67.02 metres which bettered the previous mark which he set in 2010 by one metre. In second place was Hakim Walcott (64.80) with former national champion Rick Francis (TTDF) third in 46.63m.
American athletes captured the open 400m races with reigning world indoor double champion Debbie Dunn (USA) taking the women's title in 54:30 ahead of compatriots Brandi Cross (55:30) and Alycia Williams (55:31). Jeremy Davis ran away with the men's race in 47:22 from Jamaican Oral Thompson (48:24) and TT's junior Deon Lendore (48:53). Defending champion and reigning World Junior 400m hurdles gold medallis Jehue Gordon was beaten into fourth (48:63). Adel Colthrust, Jeminise Parris and Moriba Morain completed sprint doubles. Colthrust (Southern Athletics) took the Boys Under 13 200m to add to the 100m dash he took on Saturday. Parris (Memphis) also was a double winner racing to gold in the girls under 15 200. Parris captured the 100m. Moriba Moriba was the victor in the boys under 20 200m to compliment his 100m victory. Rob Novak took the 800/1500m double.
The American sped to gold in the 800m to after taking the 1500m on Saturday. Cleveland Forde (Guyana) finished strongly to pass Alexis Pina in the final 100m to take the men's 5000m much to the delight of the Guaracara Park crowd. T&T's Denzel Ramirez was third. Reigning world indoor double champion Debbie Dunn also did a double taking the women's 200m and 400m. Yesterday she sped to gold in half lap event in 23:68 to add to the 400m victory on Saturday.
