The findings of an opinion survey conducted by NACTA over the last week show the Government's approval rating continuing to slip over the last few months, while Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar and Ministers Jack Warner, Glenn Ramadharsingh, Vasant Bharath, and Roodal are still held in high regards by the population.The findings of the poll are obtained from interviews with 404 respondents (45 per cent Indians, 36 per cent Africans, 18 per cent Mixed, and one per cent Others) reflecting the demographics of the population. The poll, conducted over the last week by Vishnu Bisram, has a five per cent margin of error.
Asked if they are satisfied with the performance of the government, 38 per cent said yes (down three per cent from February) with 45 per cent saying no (up by two per cent) and 17 per cent offering no response.Many government supporters say they were disappointed with unforced errors committed by the government and its failure to support Nizam Mohammed over his controversial ethic imbalance statement.
Asked if they approved of Persad-Bissessar's performance as Prime Minister, 59 per cent said yes with 32 per cent disapproving and nine per cent offering no opinion. Asked if they approve of Dr Keith Rowley's performance as Opposition Leader, 46 per cent said yes with 38 per cent disapproving and 16 per cent saying they were not sure. Opposition supporters appeared pleased with their party, with 78 per cent approving of the handling and outcome of the party's internal elections held last month.
Asked which minister impressed the most with performance, most respondents chose Jack Warner of Works and Transport Ministry who led with 35 per cent, followed by Glenn Ramadharsingh of Peoples Ministry, with 24 per cent, Vasant Bharath of Agriculture with 17 per cent, and Roodal Moonilal of Housing with 12 per cent.
Other ministers had very poor scores, with respondents saying the Prime Minister needed to reshuffle her cabinet and drop some of the ministers.Asked if they agreed with former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday that the country had been betrayed by its leaders, only 27 per cent said yes, mostly supporters of the UNC.Asked if they supported calls for President Max Richards to resign or be recalled from office, only 23 per cent said yes.Asked if they agreed with fired PSC chair Nizam Mohammed that sections of the media had a racist agenda to hound him out of office, only 21 per cent said yes with mostly Indians backing him.
