Mayor of Chaguanas Orlando Nagessar has embarked on an environmental plan to beautify the borough. Nagessar intends to accomplish his mission with the help of several interest groups and service clubs, business organisations, sporting and cultural groups. The mayor will seek input from the various stakeholders through a consultative programme. "This process will entail working with these organisations to take ownership of the several recreation grounds, sporting facilities and other public places to maintain them so that they would have inputs in the overall management," Nagessar said in an interview. "For instance, we will work with the sporting clubs by way of assisting them financially and otherwise to maintain their grounds for cricket, football and athletics. They will have to look at their upkeep, so the council would focus on other serious issues facing the people," he said.
"We have had a few pilot projects in this area of endeavour, and they have proven workable," he said.
Nagessar also spoke of the urgent need to get business houses and service clubs to adopt "a piece of wall and insert murals and paintings reflecting the social, cultural and sporting strengths and contributions of the many people in the area." He said the borough was focusing on a stringent, environmentally-friendly programme. Primary and secondary schools will also be enlisted in the initiative. "Whilst it is an environmental project, it will also bring out the creative and latent talents of our young people," he said.
He said his recent visit to the Mayor of the City of Fort Lauderdale has already begun to bear fruit.
"The City of Fort Lauderdale is assisting us in environmental waste and this programme has already touched some 23 schools in the area," he said. A cricket team from the borough will visit Fort Lauderdale to play several matches with T&T and Caribbean nationals there, he said. "We have embarked on a new thrust in local government processes by working with the people, and this will augur a new and bonded relationship between the governors and the governed. We intend to make the Borough of Chaguanas a model area as we have become proactive for the eventual declaration of the City of Chaguanas," he said.
