Chaguanas is working to renew and strengthen its ties with neighbouring Venezuela. The statement was made yesterday by Chaguanas mayor Orlando Nagessar when Venezuelan Ambassador Maria Eugenia Marcano Casado paid a courtesy call at his office. Nagessar said in the 1990s Chaguanas was twinned with the Chacao municipality, one of five political and administrative sub-divisions of the city of Caracas, Venezuela. This was during the tenure of former Chaguanas mayor Winston Seereeram.
Nagessar said: "That marriage did not last long because the government had changed and the PNM regime had a new policy that discouraged twinning and as a result the marriage between Chacao and Chaguanas went sour." Nagessar said Marcano brought in a new spirit and energy to renew that acquaintance. He said several individuals were keen to learn English and Spanish in T&T and Venezuela. Nagessar said he was hoped to increase economic and cultural ties and promote tourism with Venezuela.
