A Princes Town man, who has the same name as prominent attorney Ravi Rajcoomar, has appeared before a Justice of the Peace charged with impersonating the lawyer and stealing $68,500 from unsuspecting clients. Ravi Rajkumar Ramdass, 47, of Buen Intento, appeared before San Fernando JP Rita Baney yesterday charged with the three indictable offences. He was granted $150,000 bail with a surety and will appear before a San Fernando magistrate this morning to answer the charges.
Ramdass was arrested by Sgt Kent Ghisyawan, acting Sgt Dexter Richardson and PC Shane Ramdath following intensive investigations.
He was charged with pretending to be an attorney-at-law on October 2, 2009, at Woodland.
The charges were laid under the Legal Practitioners' Act. He also was charged with stealing $8,500 between December 2010 to March 2011, $35,500 between October 2009 and September 2010, and $25,000 from January 2010 to February 2011. The money was allegedly obtained from people who paid Ramdass with the expectation that he represented them in legal matters.
