The cancellation of the highly advertised Unconditional Love concert, featuring Grammy-award winning singer Toni Braxton, and James Ingram is now a legal issue.A source close to the promoter said the event organiser had been scammed out of the contract by an international booking agent. Close to 5,000 tickets have reportedly been sold for the show which was scheduled for the Queen's Park Savannah on Saturday. Yesterday it was rumoured Braxton had opted out of the concert due to death threats. However, the source yesterday denied those allegations.
He said: "If there were death threats to Braxton then there would have been police reports. Where are those police reports? But, I can tell you that the situation is now a legal issue. "The story is that the promoter paid an international booking agent to source Braxton's services and when it was found out he did not secure her services, the local promoter went ahead and tried to organise for her to come. "Having done that, that's when the death threats thing came about." A press release yesterday stated due to reasons beyond the control of the show's promoter, Braxton was unable to fulfil her contractual commitment to perform in Trinidad, as previously agreed to by contract.
The release said the promoter "sincerely apologises" for any inconvenience caused. However, "in the interest of transparency and honesty," the promoter felt cancellation was the most prudent option. The release added that refunds would be available at the point of purchase of tickets from today to May 20.
Meanwhile, Braxton's sister, Tamar, confirmed to BET network the Mother's Day show had been cancelled. She stated the singer feared for her life and "doesn't want to be mixed up in the crossfire between promoters." BET quoted the singer as saying she has kids and would not perform "under such circumstances."
