Member of Parliament for San Fernando West and Energy and Energy Affairs Minister Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan says more schools will benefit from renewable energy projects over the coming months. The minister was speaking on Wednesday with students from forms one to four at Presentation College, San Fernando, during the official launch of a programme titled Mainstreaming Renewable Energy Projects in Schools, piloted by the United Nations Association of Trinidad and Tobago (UNATT).
She said: "Given the level of interest I have seen here today and the depth of knowledge, I want to make a commitment to you. "The UNATT programme has marked nine schools for the installation of these solar stills and I will seek to expand this programme so that we can include more schools, give more opportunities and access to more students and ensure that the Government's approach to implementing renewable energy is broadened and sustained," the minister said.
Commenting on the future of energy in T&T, Seepersad-Bachan told students: "You must be the champions for Renewable Energy."Growing up, my training was steeped in the non-renewable, conventional kinds of energy and today, as Minister of Energy and Energy Affairs, it is incumbent upon the Government of the People's Partnership to ensure that you have every opportunity and access to resources to prepare for an era of renewable energy," she said. "The Government is now depending on you to ensure that as we commence this transition from conventional to renewable energy, and provide the platform for this transition, that you champion the progress of renewable energy and ensure that our future is secure."
Presentation College San Fernando is the first school in south Trinidad to benefit from the programme.
