A pregnant woman, who claimed she was beaten by police officers, was slapped yesterday with $14,000 in fines for marijuana related offences. Nkechi Phillip, 20, of Pleasantville, who complained of feeling weak, was allowed to sit when she appeared before Magistrate Roger Ramgoolam in the San Fernando Second Magistrate's Court. The mother of a four- year-old boy pleaded guilty to trafficking 1.211 kilogrammes of marijuana and possession of 12.6 grammes of marijuana.
On a third charge of assaulting WPC Natasha Subero, Phillip pleaded not guilty and was granted her own bail in the sum of $10,000. She was arrested on Wednesday.Prosecutor Sgt Rudy Ali said around 2.45 am the police stopped Phillip who was driving her car along Jadoo Street, Mon Repos. Upon searching it they found over one kilogramme of marijuana stacked in three bales on the floor of the left front seat. The officers also searched her home at Block 12, Christian Drive, Caratal Road, Gasparillo and found 12.6 grammes of marijuana. Phillip, who was allowed six weeks to pay the fines, will reappear in court on May 13.
