The Congress of the People (COP) has denied claims the party was involved with the Jamaat al Muslimeen.
Party chairman Joseph Toney said the party had never been associated with the group and condemned statements suggesting so.On Wednesday, Jamaat member Jamaal Shabazz told the commission of enquiry into the 1990 attempted coup of the secret political love affair between the Jamaat and T&T major political parties, including the COP. Shabazz challenged the COP to "come and dispute this.
"The Muslimeen worked with all political parties in the 2007 general election until it was a joke," Shabazz added. In a media release yesterday, Toney said: "The Congress of the People wishes to make it pellucidly clear the party, since its existence, has had no association with the Jamaat al Muslimeen." He said Shabazz's statements were aimed at hurting the party's image. He added: "We vehemently condemn the statements in which he implicated the party as having associated with the Jamaat in the past. "The party regards these statements as calculated mischief aimed at hurting the image of the party."
