Irate members of the public jeered Penal mother Denise Flemming who hid her face yesterday while being escorted to the Siparia Magistrates' Court to answer a charge of wounding her nine-year-old daughter, Aaliyah. Flemming was granted $70,000 bail by Siparia Magistrate Jo-Anne Connor, who warned her to stay away from the child. Aaliyah, a Standard Two pupil of San Fernando Anglican Primary School, was stabbed several times about the body at her Quarry Road, Morne Diablo, home last week. She remains warded at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Yesterday shouts of "why you hiding your face for?" and "show yuh face" could be heard from bystanders who expressed their outrage as Flemming, 30, covered her face with a white long-sleeve sweater, while being led to and from the court. Flemming, of Quarry Road, Morne Diablo, Penal, stood before Connor accused of wounded Aaliyah Flemming with intent to cause grievious bodily harm on May 17. She was represented by attorney Ramnarine Soorjansingh who applied for bail on her behalf.
He told the court Flemming, who is self employed, had no pending matters and no previous convictions. Police prosecutor, acting Insp Trevor Bernard, said Aaliyah was "still at a ward in the hospital" but confirmed that Flemming had no criminal record. Connor placed the woman on $70,000 bail to be approved by the clerk of the peace. However, in granting bail, Connor issued a stern warning to Flemming: "You are to have no interaction with the child." Flemming would reappear in court on June 17.
