A woman drowned on Sunday while trying to rescue her husband, a police officer. Police said around 4 pm, Sunita Singh Dandrade, 21, was with a group of friends and relatives at Balandra beach when her husband got into difficulties while swimming. Dandrade and other bathers attempted to save him but she was swept away by a strong current.
Her husband, a police officer attached to the Sangre Grande Police Station, was rescued and lifeguards administered CPR until he responded. He was rushed to the Sangre Grande Hospital where he is warded.
Lifeguards later recovered Dandrade's body. Sgt Beverly Paul, Cpl Soodeen, PCs Dabro and Glasco visited the scene and are continuing investigations. (DA)
