Nine-year old Aaliyah Flemming, who received stab wounds during a dispute at her home last week, is now receiving counselling at the San Fernando General Hospital. She is said to be recovering well.
Acting medical director of the San Fernando General Hospital, Steve Medford, said yesterday that Aaliyah's wounds are superficial for the most part and she had been declared medically fit after three days of her admission.
However, Medford said that due to the ordeal the child experienced, social workers decided that she should be thoroughly evaluated and counselled before discharge. Yesterday, the child's father, Davis Flemming said Aaliyah was on her way to clinic to determine how her wounds were healing and how soon the bandages might be removed. The father, who owns a tyre shop and garage in Fyzabad, said Aaliyah will be staying with his mother in San Fernando when she is released.
The child's mother, Denise Flemming, appeared in the Siparia Magistrates' Court on Monday last to answer a charge of wounding with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. The mother has since been granted bail in the sum of $70,000 and has been ordered to stay clear of the child. Aaliyah, a standard two student of San Fernando Girls' Anglican School, was stabbed several times about the head, neck and hand on May 17 at the family home at Quarry Road, Morne Diablo, Penal.
