De­tec­tives of the Barataria Po­lice Sta­tion are prob­ing the cir­cum­stances un­der which a re­tired po­lice in­spec­tor shot and wound­ed a man on El So­cor­ro Main Road on Sun­day. Ve­hesh Jaikaran, 26, was up to late yes­ter­day ward­ed at the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex in a sta­ble con­di­tion. Po­lice said around 7 pm a crowd of peo­ple at­tend­ing a wed­ding re­cep­tion were stand­ing in the road­way on El So­cor­ro Main Road. A re­port said the re­tired of­fi­cer and a fe­male rel­a­tive were at­tempt­ing to dri­ve through the crowd when one of the pa­trons broke the wing mir­ror of the re­tiree's car.

Po­lice said they were told a man al­so took up a bot­tle and ap­proached the front pas­sen­ger seat where the woman was sit­ting In­ves­ti­ga­tors said they al­so were in­ves­ti­gat­ing a re­port that the man with the bot­tle at­tempt­ed to re­move some­thing from in­side his cloth­ing and at the same time at­tempt­ed to throw the bot­tle at the woman. The of­fi­cer told po­lice he feared for his life and that of the woman and drew his li­censed re­volver and fired a shot which caught Jaikaran. Jaikaran was rushed to hos­pi­tal. Po­lice said pre­lim­i­nary in­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed the of­fi­cer's mir­ror was bro­ken and part of the car dent­ed. Up to late yes­ter­day evening state­ments were be­ing tak­en from wit­ness­es. Barataria Po­lice are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
