The Ministry of Education and officers of the Barataria Police Station say they are reviewing footage of the video on Facebook showing a schoolgirl being beaten by another female student and an unidentified woman. The incident took place outside a school in Barataria. They are Form Five students. Officials of the school, who asked not to be identified, said yesterday said the perpetrators involved would not be allowed to take part in the school's graduation ceremony. A teacher at the school said those involved had since completed their five-year term at the school and did not attend the institution anymore.
He added: "The students will not take part in the graduation ceremony since it was their last day at school. They were writing exams on their last day when it happened. "They are now at home awaiting results. They cannot be suspended since they are not in school. We do not know who the woman is in the video and it was only a few students that was part of the fight." The teacher said the school had not been painted in a "bad light" in the past few years. "We did very good. After years of absence... things were going well. This is also something that happened outside the school grounds where we have no control," he said.
The school won last year's modern dance and a drama workshop competition. Police said several statements were taken from the students and other eyewitnesses. In the footage, several students, dressed in school uniform, were seen liming for a period of time before the girl was attacked by the other female student. Other students stood by and cheered on as the student was attacked. As the girl fell into a drain, about four feet deep, the other student followed and continued to beat her. The footage also showed an unidentified woman pounding on the girl as she remained helpless in the drain.
