A 30-year-old mother of five who allegedly abandoned her children, including a six-month-old baby, was remanded to St Ann's Mental Hospital yesterday after she appeared before a San Fernando magistrate charged with the offence. The children have been removed from the family's King's Wharf, San Fernando, home and placed at a home for children in Woodland. Kezi Doughty appeared before Magistrate Alicia Chankar charged with wilfully abandoning her five children-ages eight, four, three, two and six months-on June 10.
Doughty, who is unemployed, did not have an attorney and pleaded not guilty to the charge. The woman's husband, who was in court, asked Chankar if he would be allowed to see his children at the home. The magistrate told him he could visit them. Police prosecutor, Sgt Russell Ramoutar, told the court Doughty did not have any pending matters. She will return to court on June 27. Neighbours reported to the police Doughty had left the children unattended on the day in question.
