A 20-year-old man was shot dead in Laven­tille just af­ter mid­night on Thurs­day, push­ing the mur­der toll to 182. Po­lice said Jer­maine Stew­art, 20, of Mor­vant, died on the spot af­ter he was shot sev­er­al times by gun­men while walk­ing on Leon Street. A re­port said res­i­dents heard loud ex­plo­sions around 12.30 am and called the po­lice.

The body was viewed by the dis­trict med­ical of­fi­cer who or­dered it re­moved to the Foren­sic Sci­ence Cen­tre for au­top­sy. De­tec­tives be­lieve Stew­art's death could be drug-re­lat­ed. There were 240 mur­ders for the cor­re­spond­ing pe­ri­od last year. Homi­cide of­fi­cers are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
