The Parent/Teacher Association (PTA) of the San Fernando Boys' Government Primary School is appealing to the Ministry of Education to assign a teacher to the first-year class, before they resort to protest action.
The small group of parents voiced their concerns at the school on Critchlow Street on Wednesday over the absence of a first-year teacher for the past seven months.
President of the PTA, Clarence Mendoza, said since November 2010 there had been no teacher at one of the first year classes. Mendoza said there was no teacher assigned to the class for two months during the first term of last year. He said when the teacher returned she was transferred to another school. "Today we are very peaceful but if we do not get a teacher for the children by September we are going out with our placards and protest in front of the Ministry of Education," Mendoza said.
He said the PTA had held meetings with the school's principal, as well as issued letters to the ministry several months ago but there was no resolution. "The principal said he had done everything in his power but as I understand the matter is out of his hands. "It is unfair for parents to purchase school uniforms and books which will be of little or no use to the students. The vice principal will sometimes fill the void," Mendoza said.
