Former government minister and Tobago East MP Rennie Dumas appeared in the Scarborough Magistrates' Court before Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan yesterday, charged with common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.The prosecution claim on June 1, 2011, Dumas assaulted Roger Simon at Arnos Vale Road, Plymouth.Dumas was not called upon to plead. He was represented by Attorney Lennox Phillip.
The prosecutor in the matter, Sgt William Davis, told the court that he had no instructions to proceed in the matter.Davis told Rambachan that the file was to be sent to the DPP office for a State attorney to be appointed to prosecute in the matter.In court, disclosures were made-the prosecutor handed over a medical certificate on behalf of the alleged victim Roger Simon, along with two station diary extracts from the Old Grange Police Station, dated June 1, 2011.
Phillips called for the disclosure of any letter or letters written to the Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs or any other police officer by attorneys acting for Roger Simon. He further requested disclosure of any letter or letters written by Roger Simon.Phillips inquired from the prosecutor whether they had any medical certificate on behalf of Dumas.The prosecutor informed the court that his information from the complainant, acting Sgt Kathleen Sterling, was that the accused had sought medical attention on his own and the police were not in possession of any medical certificate for Dumas.Three prosecution witnesses, including the alleged victim, were in court on Wednesday.The matter was adjourned to October 6.
