A La Romaine father whose 15-year-old son pleaded guilty to stealing $5,000 worth of jewelry from his aunt has been reprimanded for the level of parental guidance being administered to his son.Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington questioned the father on the kind of guidance he had been giving to the 15-year-old La Romaine student, who appeared in the San Fernando First Court on Monday. The father, in his defence, said he was a working man."So because you working cannot mean you can't guide him. Obviously you are not giving him any guidance. He is not learning anything in school," Wellington said. The teen was remanded to the Youth Training Centre, pending a probation officer's report. He will reappear on July 19.
The teen, who was arrested by PC Trevor Seepersad, was charged with larceny of the jewelry from the family's Church Street, La Romaine, home on June 21.Police prosecutor Sgt Alimudeen Mohammed told the court that around 10 pm on June 20, the teen's aunt last saw three gold rings and one gold chain in a jewelry box on her dressing table at her home.Around 4 pm on June 22, the aunt discovered them missing and made a report to San Fernando Police Station. On June 26, Seepersad met the teen at the station with his grandmother. He told the police: "Officer, I gone in the room and I see a jewelry box on the TV. I open the box and take three gold rings and a chain from the box and I sell it to a man by the gas station for $1,500."
