New political leader of the Congress of the People, Legal Affairs Minister Prakash Ramadhar says he is ready to act as prime minister if asked to do so by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bisessar. Under the Fyzabad Declaration establishing the People’s Partnership, the leaders of the member units of the Government are eligible to act as prime minister during Persad-Bissessar’s absence from the country.

Ramadhar was questioned during yesterday news conference to announce the names of three of his deputy political leaders. “And acting as prime minister will be a great honour and yes, I am up to that challenge,” he added. Ramadhar said the structure of the People’s Partnership had to be modified. He said a COP team was to be established this weekend “to come up with our views on how the structure should work.” He said when that process was completed, the proposed changes would be presented to the other members of the partnership for acceptance or further amendments.
