A Belmont man was yesterday ordered to pay $9,000 for stealing a car in Chaguaramas on Saturday.Marlon Mckie, 27, a self-employed plumber, pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Gloria Jasmath in the Port-of-Spain Eleventh Court.Mckie was accused of stealing a Mitsubishi Lancer at the Chagville Beach facility on Saturday afternoon.
He was later caught by police after he crashed the vehicle into a wall in the Carenage area, while making his escape. The vehicle valued at $4,000 was completely destroyed in the crash.Jasmath ordered Mckie to pay a $5,000 fine and also $4,000 compensation to the owner of the vehicle. He was given six weeks to pay or in default face six months' hard labour.Mckie was represented by attorney Richard Clarke-Wills, while Sgt Joe Joseph prosecuted for the state. (DA)
