Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has called on trade union leaders to meet with her.Persad-Bissessar's made the call late yesterday as members of the trade union movement were preparing to deliver the Workers' Accord to her office in St Clair this morning.A report on CNC3 last night said the Prime Minister asked Minister of Planning Dr Bhoendradatt Tewarie to arrange a meeting with the labour leaders to discuss their concerns in consultation with Minister of Labour, Small and Micro Enterprise Development Errol McLeod.
The report said Persad-Bissessar said the Government viewed the labour movement as a partner and was committed to addressing the issues affecting workers.Responding to Persad-Bissessar's call for a consultation, Oilfield Workers' Trade Union (OWTU) president Ancel Roget said the labour movement would not hold any consultation unless the five per cent wage cap was removed.Roget claimed that the Prime Minister was trying to protect her image and her call for discussions would do nothing to stop today's action.
