Even though murder victim Anthony Douglas was 22 years of age he still acted as a child but was no trouble-maker. Douglas, of Snake Valley, Laventille, was gunned down at the corner of Henry Street and Independence Square around 2 am Saturday. He was one of seven people murdered over the weekend, taking this year's murder toll to 206 up to late yesterday. In an interview at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday Douglas' relatives said they were shocked over his death. He was not a gang member, they added.
A relative added: "He was not a trouble-maker. He used to be twisting his hair and have his pants dropping off his waist. "The police would come and pull him up and rub him down because he looked like that. We went and give him $30 and tell him to go cut his hair and pull up his pants." The relative said as far as they knew Douglas went to buy some doubles when he was killed. "We are trying to come to terms with his death. We are still trying to answer questions and nobody isn't saying anything. He was not in no gang," a relative (who refused to be named) said. She said Douglas was "baby like, pampered and disciplined." She added: "He was quiet and when he didn't want to talk, it was silence. He used to like to play computer games."
The relative said another family member also had a premonition of Douglas' death. "She had a bad dream and got up from her sleep lilke she was fighting somebody and crying. He (Douglas) told her she had goat mouth and she accustom to those things," the relative said. Also on Saturday, around 8.30 pm, "PH" driver, Kevon Fredericks, was shot dead at the corner of Nelson Street and Independence Square North. Fredericks, 28, of 17th Street, Beetham Gardens, was plying for hire when he was shot. Also, Devon Rodriguez, of East Dry River, Port-of-Spain, was killed at the corner of Duncan Street and Independence Square around 12.15 am on Sunday. Police said the killing of Rodrigues and Fredericks might be a reprisal for Douglas's murder. But they had no concrete evidence of that.
Investigators said, however, they had put measures in place. Fredericks' relatives believed he was targeted because he was a Beetham Gardens resident. "We believe he was killed because of the area he lived," a relative said. Rodrigues' family refused to comment on his death. The other victims were killed in separate incidents in Enterprise, Chaguanas, Maraval and Arima. Investigators said an arrest was imminent in several of the murders. However, those in Port-of-Spain were more difficult to solve.
The other victims were: -Gail St Bryce, who was found with her throat slit at her Rajpaul Street home, Enterprise, on Friday. -David "Machine Gun" Kelly, 42, a father of two, was shot eight times at Pinto Road, Arima. -Crespar Lowar, whose body was discovered at Vallot Street, Boissiere Village, Maraval, on Saturday morning. -Harold Hospedales, 60, who was chopped to death at Esperanza Street, Gran Couva, on Sunday. Homicide officers are continuing investigations.
