Member of Parliament for Arima Rodger Samuel is concerned about the escalating level of crime in the Arima/La Horquetta area. He was speaking in response to the murder of Vonetta Haynes-Reyes, 31, and her sons, Melik, 8 and Makasi, 4, at their home on Plumbago Avenue, La Horquetta, Arima, on Thursday evening. He added: "Crime in Arima has escalated over the last few years. "Arima is becoming the hub for illegal activities and it is something that we are closely monitoring together with the protective services. "It is a serious situation in the eastern area and I am really concerned about it.
Samuel was speaking during a tour with Minister of Works and Infrastructure, Jack Warner, at Dump Road, Waller Field, yesterday. He said: "We are viewing the situation seriously with the means of finding solutions to it. We've had meetings with the security services two weeks ago." Samuel said the Police Commissioner and his team were at the Arima Town Hall to look at the situation regarding crime in the area as they had been doing across the country.
"I myself have had a team of people who have been looking at the crime situation in order for us to collaborate our ideas with the protect services," he said. Samuel said he was on the scene of the La Horquetta triple murder on Thursday evening. He said: "Though I am not the MP, I live in the area. It is something that is shocking because that entire area is normally a quiet one. "For something so tragic like this to happen, our nation is deteriorating rapidly and we need to do something seriously and drastically about it."
