Brickfield under criminal siege

Couva North MP Ramona Ramdial is taking a pro-active approach to fighting crime in her constituency. She met with residents of Brickfield Village last week to discuss recent proposals that will see 21st century policing coming from August 6. Ramdial said the initiative would involve policemen from the Freeport Police Station going into the troubled community to take reports rather than victims having to go to the police station. Ramdial has planned meetings throughout the constituency and noted that one such meeting was planned for Roystonia on Thursday. Residents of Roystonia have complained of an influx of criminals sweeping the community and targeting homes. She said greater vigilance was needed amongst community members to combat crime.

Residents of Brickfield told the Sunday Guardian they were bombarded by criminal elements from Chaguanas and Port-of-Spain. Residents claim most of the criminals hitting their community occupy neighbouring squatter communities and target homes in the area. They say everyone knows where the criminals are and where the drug blocks are...except the police. —Shastri Boodan
