Hours after murder victims Vonetta Haynes-Reyes and her two sons were buried on Wednesday, police detained a 24-year-old male suspect from the La Horquetta area.The suspect, who was arrested late Wednesday night, was said to be co-operating with Region 2 Homicide detectives while being interrogated at their offices in Arouca last night.Sources said the murder weapon was yet to be recovered.Investigators were in the field last night hoping to retrieve the weapon.The officers are expected to hold discussions with the Director of Public Prosecutions today as the suspect was reportedly providing good leads to solve the murders.Haynes-Reyes, 31, and her sons, Malik, 8, and Makasi, 4, were found murdered last week Thursday at their Plumbago Avenue, La Horquetta, Arima, home by a 20-year-old friend.
Malik and Makasi were pupils of Arima New Government School.Last Friday, homicide detectives released two suspects after questioning.Post-mortems conducted at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, revealed that both boys died of chop wounds to the neck, while their mother, an employee of a cosmetics store at the Trincity Mall, succumbed to stab wounds to the neck. The family was on Wednesday laid to rest at the D'Abadie Industrial Cemetery after a funeral service at Allen's Funeral Chapel, Broadway, Arima.ASP Kenrick Edwards and Sgt Kirt Simon of Region 2 Homicide are conducting investigations.
