A 24-year-old La Hor­quet­ta man is ex­pect­ed to ap­pear in the Ari­ma Mag­is­trates' Court on Tues­day charged with the mur­der of of Vonet­ta Haynes-Reyes and her sons, Ma­lik and Makasi. The man, a welder, was ar­rest­ed by homi­cide of­fi­cers on Wednes­day evening at a rel­a­tive's home in St Au­gus­tine, hours af­ter the fam­i­ly was buried at the D'Abadie In­dus­tri­al Ceme­tery. Po­lice said the files from the in­ves­ti­ga­tion were tak­en to the Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions (DPP) Roger Gas­pard yes­ter­day. In­ves­ti­ga­tors said Gas­pard gave the or­der to charge the man for the triple mur­der late yes­ter­day.

Re­ports stat­ed the sus­pect gave po­lice good leads while un­der in­ter­ro­ga­tion for the killings. Po­lice said they were wait­ing to re­cov­er the mur­der weapon be­fore ap­proach­ing the DPP. They said they were able to re­cov­er the weapon from in­for­ma­tion pro­vid­ed dur­ing in­ter­ro­ga­tion. Hayes-Reyes, 31, and her sons, Ma­lik, 8, and Makasi, 4, were found mur­dered at their Plumba­go Av­enue home at 3 pm last Thurs­day.

They were dis­cov­ered by a 20-year-old friend of Haynes-Reyes. Her Nis­san B12 ve­hi­cle, which was ini­tial­ly miss­ing from her home when the bod­ies were found, was lat­er found aban­doned at Cara­po, Ari­ma.

Po­lice say ev­i­dence col­lect­ed at the home by Spe­cial An­ti-Crime Unit T&T (Sautt) crime scene in­ves­ti­ga­tors was sent abroad for foren­sic analy­sis. Post mortems re­vealed the boys died of chop wounds to the neck while their moth­er, an em­ploy­ee at a cos­met­ic store at Trinci­ty Mall, died from stab wounds to the neck. Act­ing Se­nior Supt David Abrahim, of North­ern Di­vi­sion, Se­nior Supt Don­ald De­noon, ASP Ken­rick Ed­wards and Sgt Kirt Si­mon, of Homi­cide Bu­reau of In­ves­ti­ga­tions, are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
