More than 150 rounds of ammunition, several components of a AK-47 assault rifle and four smoke grenades were discovered yesterday by police during an early morning exercise in Diego Martin. At around 6 am, officers of the North-Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF), led by Sgt Roger Alexander, made the discovery at a forested area in Good Session, Patna Village, Diego Martin. A police issue bulletproof vest also was found by the officers.
No arrests were made. Police say the discovery was linked to a recent bust by the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB), when three similar rifles were recovered in a vehicle travelling along the Audrey Jeffers Highway, near the Jean Pierre Complex. A 27-year-old man from Diego Martin was arrested in connection with that exercise. Sgt Cornelius Samuel, Cpl Sunil Bharath and PCs Jerome Gordon and Trevor Rambaran also were involved in the exercise. Investigations are continuing.
