For­mer may­or of Port-of-Spain Steven­son Sargeant has passed away.Sargeant died at 7 pm on Mon­day at Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal at age 75, af­ter be­ing ill for some time.Sargeant, of St James, served as may­or from 1983 to 1987.As may­or, he fought to in­tro­duce traf­fic laws with­in the city.He was a mem­ber of the Peo­ple's Na­tion­al Move­ment (PNM), pre­vi­ous­ly serv­ing as the par­ty's pub­lic re­la­tions of­fi­cer and field of­fi­cer.Sargeant al­so served as chair­man of T&T As­so­ci­a­tion of Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Au­thor­i­ties.He was in­volved in sports and pub­licly sup­port­ed na­tion­al net­ball hero Jean Pierre. Sargeant leaves to mourn his wife Grace.

PNM pays trib­ute­to Steven­son Sargeant

PNM gen­er­al sec­re­tary Ash­ton Forde has ex­pressed his con­do­lences to the fam­i­ly of for­mer may­or of Port-of-Spain Steven­son Sargeant on the be­half the PNM.In a tele­phone in­ter­view yes­ter­day, Forde said Sargeant was a val­ued mem­ber of the PNM and served in var­i­ous po­si­tions with­in the par­ty.He said Sargeant was a car­ing man, who was al­ways will­ing to help those in need in and around the city.Forde said Sargeant was a ded­i­cat­ed may­or who con­tin­u­ous­ly worked to make Port-of-Spain the best.He de­scribed Sargeant as a "true Tri­ni" who was al­ways in­volved in cul­tur­al events and loved Car­ni­val.

Lee Sing: T&T haslost an­oth­er pa­tri­ot

These were the sen­ti­ments of May­or of Port-of-Spain Louis Lee Sing on the pass­ing away of for­mer Port-of-Spain may­or Steven­son Sargeant.In an in­ter­view yes­ter­day, Lee Sing said as may­or, Sargeant did an ex­cep­tion­al job of look­ing af­ter the city.Lee Sing said Sargeant was fun­da­men­tal in bring­ing about a change in the cor­po­rate cul­ture of the city.He said Sargeant was "one of the fin­er minds in the hu­man re­source de­part­ment," and did sub­stan­tial work in re­struc­tur­ing the Pub­lic Ser­vice.As a mem­ber of the PNM, Lee Sing said Sargeant great­ly con­tributed to the de­vel­op­ment of the par­ty.He said: "He will be mourned with­in the par­ty, out­side of the par­ty and def­i­nite­ly in the Port-of-Spain City Cor­po­ra­tion."He ex­tend­ed his deep­est con­do­lences to fam­i­ly and friends of the late Steven­son Sargeant.
