San Juan landowners may soon be called to pay up to their regional corporation for lands cleared in the fight against dengue. According to Nafeesa Mohammed, chairman of the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation empty lots of land were being made into breeding grounds for the aedes aegypti mosquito. In a telephone interview, Mohammed said the corporation was being called on by citizens to clear lands overgrown by bushes. "Some of these lands have owners and as a corporation we cannot provide the services of cutting people's personal property for free," said Mohammed.
She said, however, that cutting and clearing the empty land was necessary because of the high number of complaints. "Decisive action needs to be taken," said Mohammed. She said because of the growing public concern arising from dengue, all the lands would be cleared but the corporation would then verify ownership and seek to be reimbursed by owners. Mohammed also called on garages and business owners to clean up their act. She said these businesses used poor practice to get rid of their garbage. "The dumping of tyres and engines encourage breeding of mosquitoes and these businesses need to be aware," Mohammed said.
