Resh­ma Ra­goonath

A 38 year-old mur­der sus­pect was among 23 peo­ple ar­rest­ed dur­ing an an­ti-crime ex­er­cise in the Princes Town and Bar­rack­pore dis­tricts yes­ter­day. The sus­pect, held in con­nec­tion with a re­cent mur­der in the Tu­na­puna area, was hand­ed over to East­ern Homi­cide Bu­reau of­fi­cers yes­ter­day af­ter he was picked up in Bar­rack­pore.

Po­lice sources de­clined to dis­close which mur­der the man had been de­tained in con­nec­tion with since the in­ves­ti­ga­tion is at a sen­si­tive stage. Yes­ter­day's an­ti-crime ex­er­cise, su­per­vised by Sgt Don Ga­jad­har, was con­duct­ed be­tween 12 am and 2 pm. Act­ing Sgt Fran­cois and Cpl In­shan Teeluck, to­geth­er with of­fi­cers of the Princes Town and Bar­rack­pore Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tions De­part­ment and the Ca­nine Unit, con­duct­ed the raids.

Oth­ers de­tained were held in con­nec­tion with var­i­ous of­fences in­clud­ing pos­ses­sion of nar­cotics, house break­ing, lar­ce­ny and rob­bery. Oth­er sus­pects were held on out­stand­ing war­rants. A to­tal of 300 grammes in mar­i­jua­na was seized.
