The state of emer­gency de­clared by Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar is like­ly to last months.Min­is­ter of Jus­tice Her­bert Vol­ney said this yes­ter­day while de­liv­er­ing an ad­dress at a meet­ing of the Port-of-Spain Ro­tary Club.

Vol­ney told club mem­bers the lim­it­ed state of emer­gency was like­ly to go past one month.In my ex­pe­ri­ence one month is not enough time to mea­sure the suc­cess of a plan, Vol­ney said.Vol­ney used the meet­ing to out­line a string of up­com­ing poli­cies to deal with re­form of the jus­tice sys­tem.As the po­lice go about their jobs of ap­pre­hend­ing and prepar­ing for the pros­e­cu­tion those who run afoul of the law, the spot­light will be on the sys­tem of Crim­i­nal Jus­tice, he said.Vol­ney de­scribed the lim­it­ed state of emer­gency as strong med­i­cine.
