The state of emergency declared by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is likely to last months.Minister of Justice Herbert Volney said this yesterday while delivering an address at a meeting of the Port-of-Spain Rotary Club.
Volney told club members the limited state of emergency was likely to go past one month. In my experience one month is not enough time to measure the success of a plan, Volney said.Volney used the meeting to outline a string of upcoming policies to deal with reform of the justice system. As the police go about their jobs of apprehending and preparing for the prosecution those who run afoul of the law, the spotlight will be on the system of Criminal Justice, he said.Volney described the limited state of emergency as strong medicine.
