A South­ern Di­vi­sion po­lice of­fi­cer is ward­ed in a sta­ble con­di­tion at the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal af­ter he was ac­ci­dent­ly shot in the chest on Thurs­day night. PC Adesh Gokool, of the South­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force, was on du­ty at the San Fer­nan­do Po­lice Sta­tion at around 10 pm when a fel­low of­fi­cer, who was clean­ing a ser­vice re­volver, ac­ci­den­tal­ly fired the weapon.

The bul­let ric­o­cheted off a steel cab­i­net be­fore strik­ing Gookol in the left side of his chest. He was tak­en to hos­pi­tal where he un­der­went emer­gency treat­ment. Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Dwayne Gibbs, com­ment­ing on the in­ci­dent at yes­ter­day's Min­istry of Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty me­dia brief­ing, said the of­fi­cer was rest­ing com­fort­ably and had not suf­fered life-threat­en­ing in­juries. In­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the in­ci­dent are con­tin­u­ing.
