A San Juan drug addict was yesterday sentenced to one year in prison with hard labour after being found by police with 10.8 grammes of cocaine. Ramlal Mohan, of Silver Mill Road, San Juan pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates' Court.
Mohan was arrested on Wednesday by police acting on intelligence. The drugs were found in his front right trouser pocket. Mohan, who has four previous convictions for drug related matters, told the court that he sold the cocaine to assist his mother who was bed ridden due to a recent stroke. He also admitted to being a habitual drug user. The matter was prosecuted by police prosecutor Sgt Azard Ali. Mohan represented himself.
