Three more illegal firearms and several rounds of ammunition have been found in Beetham Gardens.The latest find was made between Monday night and early yesterday at the community centre.It followed an earlier exercise in the same area where five guns, believed also to have been used in gang warfare, were found.A report said acting on a tip-off, police officers went to the community centre and found the three guns-two pistols, a revolver and 21 rounds of ammunition hidden in the ceiling.ASP Sahadeo Singh, Cpl Donovan Thompson, PC Trevor Kamal and a party of officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force, Port-of-Spain Task Force and Port-of-Spain CID took part in that exercise.Investigators said they suspected that criminals were using the community centre to store firearms and other items for illegal activity.They said the community centre was now under construction and had been vandalised.Senior officers praised the work of the lawmen in their pursuit to eradicate crime. Earlier on Monday, detectives received information and went to 22nd and 23rd Streets in Beetham Gardens where they found the five guns buried near the berm.The officers used metal detectors and dogs from the Mounted and Canine Branch to assist them.Meanwhile, a shotgun and eight rounds of ammunition were seized by the police during an exercise in the San Raphael forest.Police said they received information and went to the forested area around noon on Monday.Insp Williams and a party of Northern Division officers took part in that exercise.The Government said a total of 38 firearms were recovered by the police since the state of emergency was implemented.
Shotgun found on beach
An anonymous call led police to a beach in Morne Diablo yesterday morning where they found a home-made shotgun. The caller contacted Crime Stoppers who passed on the information to the Penal police.PC Maharaj led a party of policemen including PCs Sooklal, Alallah, Sooklal, WPC Bickram and Mentor, to the beach at around 1 am where they conducted a search. The gun was found in a garbage bag in the roots of a "picker patch." No ammunition was found and no one was arrested. Investigations are continuing. (SW)
