The family of Caleb Dyer, an infant who died five minutes after his birth, are calling on the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) and the Ministry of Health to give a full account of the complications leading to his death.Kamilah Marcano-Dyer, 19, went to Port-of-Spain General Hospital on August 18, filled with joy at the thought of delivering her first child. Her feelings changed to anxiety, however, when doctors informed her that an emergency Caesarean section was needed in order to safely deliver her child.Kamilah's mother, Bobby Sue Marcano, who spoke in a telephone interview, said doctors told the family surgery would last approximately one hour.Hours later, after lengthy surgery, Marcano said doctors came to her and said, "The baby died but we think your daughter will be all right."
When asked what happened, she said doctors responded that they did not know, but the family was later told that the infant's death was the result of a brain haemorrhage."We don't understand, her private doctor said everything was fine, the baby was healthy," Marcano said. She claims she was later told by an employee of the hospital that the surgery was delayed because doctors spent close to an hour searching for anaesthesia.Kamilah says while waiting for the surgery doctors gave her several spinal injections which she suspected could have been harmful to her baby.Marcano also claims that during surgery doctors cut a nerve in her daughter's stomach which, she was told, could result in a loss of feeling below the stomach for the rest of her life.Antoinette Brotherson, communications officer at the NWRHA, said the authority was looking into the matter but could not comment further on the situation.
