A tear gas canister, four firearms as well as ammunition were seized by the police in separate incidents on Saturday night in Petit Valley and Morvant. An AK-47 with 22 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, a Baretta pistol with two fully-loaded nine-millimetre magazines containing 46 rounds of ammunition, two 12-gauge shotgun cartridges and a type of tear gas canister were discovered at Cameron Road in Petit Valley. Insp Henry Dann, Woman Cpl Yvette Campbell and WPC King Guerra took part in the exercise along with officers of the Criminal Investigations Unit. Investigators said the discovery was made after they acted on intelligence received two days ago. The lawmen went to the area around 11.30 pm and discovered the guns, ammunition and the canister stuffed in a black garbage bag at the side of the road.
Police said the two firearms were of interest because those were the types of weapons that were most commonly used. Lawmen suspect the items were used to carry out criminal activity and gang-related violence in the area. Senior officers said in the past, perpetrators in their division used to throw tear gas on the premises of residents to flush them out of their houses. The firearms will be sent to the Forensic Science Centre today for ballistic testing to see if they were used recently. In the second exercise, a 12-gauge pump action shot gun, a .38 Luger with 20 rounds of .38 ammunition were discovered in a tunnel between two buildings in Morvant. The exercise which was spearheaded by Supt John Daniel and led by Sgt Roger Alexander and Cpl Sunil Bharath was conducted between 4 pm and 9 pm at Hernandez Street.
