Archbishop-elect Fr Joseph Everard Harris will be ordained during a special celebration at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception this afternoon.The ordination Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Edward Gilbert, beginning at 5 pm. He will be assisted by a host of clergy. A large number of regional clergy as well as members of the Antilles Episcopal Conference are expected to attend.Also expected to be among the dignitaries at the ordination are acting President Timothy Hamel-Smith, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Chief Justice Ivor Archie and Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley, as well as members of the diplomatic corps.Fr Harris, who takes over the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church on the retirement of Archbishop Gilbert in late December, will become the second son of the soil to assume that responsibility.The first was Archbishop Anthony Pantin, who died in 2000 after serving for 32 years as head of the local church.Fr Harris, a member of the Spiritan Order (Holy Ghost Fathers), just as was Archbishop Pantin, was ordained on July 14, 1968, and served in various missionary capacities in Paraguay, South America from 1969-1982.
He also served as rector of the Regional Seminary of St John Vianney and the Uganda Martyrs at Mount St Benedict from 1993-1999.He has also done pastoral work in several parishes in the archdiocese-Holy Trinity, Arouca; St Anthony's, Petit Valley; and St Ann's, Port-of-Spain. Until his appointment he served as judicial vicar of the Archdiocese.Fr Joe, as he is fondly called, served as provincial superior of his congregation and did a three-year stint lecturing in Spirituality, as well as director of formation, Holy Ghost Scholasticate, Chicago, USA. He has also published several papers on theology.
