Barrackpore fireman Zyad Mohammed has been remanded in custody until next Monday pending sentence for failing to provide a specimen for breathalyser testing. Mohammed, of Cunjal Road, Barrackpore, on Tuesday was remanded after Princes Town magistrate Nalini Singh refused to grant him bail pending sentence. His lawyer, Petronilla Basdeo, who applied for bail, said Mohammed was the father of two children, aged 4 and 5-and-a-half, and was a contributing member of society. However, the magistrate was not swayed and refused to grant bail.
According to the facts, read by police prosecutor Sgt Rampath, Mohammed went to the Barrackpore Police Station on Saturday to make a report. Officers detected alcohol on his breath and asked him to give a sample of breath for testing. Mohammed agreed. However, when he was told he had to go Gasparillo Police Station for testing he refused. He was later charged with failing to give a sample of breath for testing. Basdeo said her client co-operated with the police and was willing to give a specimen. However, she said, there was no equipment in Princes Town for testing.
